Turkey had been part of my life for two years, and I was sad to leave but the time felt right for me. I'm taking some time out back in the UK and will use this time to decide on my next adventure.

Some time ago I wrote a blog about what I missed about the UK, so I think it's only right that I do the same for Turkey.

1. People. I miss my friends so much, it was very difficult to say goodbye to them. The students I taught in Izmir and Ankara were fantastic. I also had great colleagues in both of my Turkish locations. The generosity of Turkish people is amazing. I miss everyone.

2. Baklava. My love for this Turkish dessert is well known. I love all varieties of baklava, and I haven't been able to find any good baklava in North Wales. If anyone knows of a UK supplier I'd be happy to hear. I think it would be difficult to ship it to the UK from Turkey.

3. The weather. This goes without saying. I've come back to Wales and a very poor summer. Although the summer in Turkey is too hot for working, I crave a little bit of sunshine in my life.

4. The food. OK I've already talked about Baklava, but Turkish food is amazing. From the gozleme, to the very tasty street food of rice with chick peas, topped with liver (or chicken). Also the various kebabs, shish, adana, tantuni (from the Mersin area of Turkey). I'm feeling hungry just thinking about it all. There is also the rather yummy pide (think long pizza). I maybe wheat and dairy intolerant, but strangely I didn't suffer from eating wheat as much as I do in the UK.

5. Leblebi. These are a love it or hate it type of thing. I hated them the first time I tried them, then I really started to love them. Roasted chick peas, which are slightly salted (although you can also get a sweet variety), and often eaten in bars with a beer. Again I would love to find them here in the UK.

I loved my two years in Turkey. I had battles with the language (usually I lost the battle, but I tried hard) and tried lots of food, although I never tried Kokorec (intestines), Sogus (a sandwich of tongue, cheek and brain) or Manti (this was only because of the wheat and dairy content!). I loved my apartment with an amazing sea view and was able to sit on the balcony watching the boats and cruise liners (when the hornets let me onto the balcony. I miss the friendly street dogs, who just lazed about in the sun. Most of all I miss the people. Turkish people are so friendly and welcoming and keen to share their language and culture with you.

I don't know where my next adventure will take me, but I do know a part of my heart will always be in Turkey.

Thank you Turkey.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08874190377946087718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5745877263379793724.post-83755205541355001692015-06-10T11:39:00.000+03:002015-06-10T11:39:02.825+03:00FocaI recently went for a day trip to Foca, which is a couple of hours away from Izmir by public transport. Public transport in Turkey is very easy to use and reasonably priced.

We arrived at lunchtime, so made our way to a fish restaurant on the seafront for a selection of Mezes.

Foca is a small town on the coast so fishing is popular. A lot of the old traditional houses have undergone renovation.
I have enjoyed all of the food I've tried. One of the most important meals is of course breakfast. Sunday morning is an important day, where families and friends have a leisurely breakfast catching up on the weeks events.

On my recent visit to Sirince, I stayed at a local Pansiyon (Bed and Breakfast) and breakfast was included. I wasn't really expecting much when I arrived as I was the only guest staying there, but I was asked what time I wanted breakfast, and I didn't think anything else about it.

The following morning I made my way to the terrace where my breakfast was to be served. The view was amazing.

There was a woman setting my table, and I was amazed at how much food there was for one person. This is a traditional village breakfast made up of cheese, olives, tomatoes, cucumber, honey with kaymak (similar to clotted cream), jam, olive oil, bread, eggs, sucuk (a type of sausage) and of course a big pot of tea. I did't have to eat again until the evening!!

Since this breakfast I have had a couple of others, one in a local restaurant in part of Izmir, unfortunately I forgot to take photos until the food was half eaten, but it included the honey and kaymak, and some amazing Izmir tulum cheese (made from goats milk), and gozleme (a type of pancake)

The next breakfast I had was in a village called Birgi, and came on individual trays, so no fighting for anything.
I love the breakfast in Turkey, and it is something I will miss when I leave.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08874190377946087718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5745877263379793724.post-63392353273428024632015-05-15T16:16:00.001+03:002015-05-15T16:16:23.352+03:00EphesusA couple of weeks ago I visit the ancient Greek city of Ephesus. I've been to Turkey so many times but this was my first visit to this popular tourist attraction.

I took a dolmus from Izmir's otogar (bus station), which only cost 10TL and just under an hour later we arrived in Selcuk. The dolmus was located on the top floor of the otogar and you paid when you got on the bus. The bus station in Selcuk is small, and very easy to navigate, and it was easy to catch another dolmus to the lower gate of Ephesus and only cost a few lira.

On arrival at Ephesus there were the usual tourist stalls selling overpriced goods, and through the hustle was the entrance gate to Ephesus. A ticket cost 30TL.

Although I'm not a history fanatic, this place certainly has the wow factor. So many pieces of history in one area.

Ephesus covers a large area, and there is so much to see. If you are visiting in the height of the summer I'd advise against being there during the midday sun as there is very little shade. I was there at the end of April and it was hot! It was also very busy as the day trippers from the nearby resorts and cruise ships had arrived. Also one mistake I made was just carrying a small amount of water. There are shops at both gates, and there is some distance between them, so make sure you have enough water!!!
This village is a short dolmus ride from Selcuk along some twisting hilly roads, surrounded by fruit crops.

The fruit is put to good use in Sirince, as they make wine. I visited one of the local wine sellers and had the opportunity to try a number of flavours including pomegranate, melon, sour cherry, strawberry, grape and peach and I have to say they were all pretty good, but I love all things pomegranate so that was my obvious choice to accompany my evening meal.

The village has around 600 inhabitants, but during the day it is very busy with busloads of tourists wanting to try the wine and also buy local products from the many shops. Unfortunately the church was closed, and as you may be able to see from my photographs it was surrounded with scaffolding.

First thing in the morning the village awakens with the first tourists, and is buzzing throughout the day, until around 6.30pm when the last dolmus leaves. The village then becomes a very quiet village again. I stayed overnight and was amazed how quiet the village was in the evening, but I'd wanted somewhere peaceful and I certainly got it.

My pension (B&B) was a little way up the hill along a track. I was woken up by the cockerels outside my bedroom window and a donkey braying across the fields.

I think the photos speak for themselves. A stunning, peaceful and traditional village.
It's located near Konak Square where the famous clock tower can be found.

It has undergone some recent renovations and is now an upmarket shopping centre, with cinema and restaurants and coffee shops, but a lot of the original features are still visible.

There is a lovely cafe at the end of the pier, where you can sit outside, right at the water's edge.
It's to be expected I guess. A few home comforts, a reminder of home.

You can sometimes find a close alternative, something that 'will do'. Somethings you can have sent from home. I miss Fruit Pastilles, so I get them sent over on occasion and recently a Creme Egg made it's way to me without any damage (Thanks Mum and Dad). These little things mean a lot when you are so far away from home.

But there are somethings that can't be sent and these items are what I'm starting to miss the most, it's almost becoming an obsession!

So when we hear through a Facebook group that these items are available there is a rush of excitement, the anticipation that we are going to get a taste of home......

I have developed an obsession to find sweet potatoes! Something very simple and it's 'almost' impossible to find them here. I say 'almost' as I hear of people locating them, so off I go to the supermarket where they have been spotted only to find they have sold out. Of course they have, someone has announced on Facebook that they are in Izmir, so all the foreigners rush to the supermarket and get there before me. I feel so disappointed when I can't find any, after I have checked all around the fruit and veg at least three times!

The sweet potato hunt is becoming quite expensive, as I don't usually go to these supermarkets and they always have something a little bit different (and quite expensive), but I feel I need to buy something from there, a little taste of home.

I go into every supermarket and fruit and vegetable shop I pass, in the hope that I'll find the orange potato. I asked in my local shop, as it seems to be quite well stocked with unusual vegetables, but they just looked at me as if I'm crazy! I gave up looking for parsnips a while ago, but one day I will find the sweet potato.

On a sunny day, after a walk along the seafront I used the 'Asansor' to get home. Asansor is a lift that links the area at sea level to one of the neighbourhoods on a higher level. It was built in 1907 by Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu, a wealthy banker and trader, as an aid to carry people and goods from the lower level. It is now mainly used as a tourist attraction with spectacular views from the top and a restaurant. Its is also still used by the local residents to get to their homes and workplaces. I used it to get back to my apartment, which is a little higher than where the Asansor takes you, but only a short walk away.
Mutlu Yillar! Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!

Well 2015 has arrived and I just about made it home to watch the fireworks over the bay. I spent Christmas in Wales, and travelled back to Izmir on 31st December and was due at home at around 9pm, but it didn't quite go to plan. After snow storms in Istanbul, two delayed flights and a wrong transport choice from the airport, I finally made it home. I hauled my 20kg suitcase and various other bags up the 70 stairs and opened my door to the sound of the first firework going off. I grabbed a bottle of Bomonti beer from the fridge to toast the New Year, watched the fireworks and that was my New Year!

New Year's Day saw a cold and windy day and I can see some snow in the distance.

New Year gives us a chance to reflect on the past year and look forward to the next. So.....

2014 highlights were:

Spending New Year in Istanbul - an amazing city and I hope to pay it another visit soon.
Visiting Cappadocia - a stunning area in Turkey which I recommend to anyone visiting the country.
Anitkabir - Ataturk's Mausoleum - A must visit place in Ankara
The summer spent in the UK with family and friends, and of course making it back to the UK for Christmas.

I met some great people while living in Ankara, and made some great friends.

Moving to Izmir has also been a great opportunity for me. I love the city but haven't really spent much time exploring, which brings me to looking forward to 2015.

There are so many places near Izmir that need exploring, but top of my list is Ephesus and Sirince (apparently the wine here is fantastic). I still haven't visited Cesme and when the weather improves I will make the bus journey, and also get to visit some Greek islands. I hope to get out and about more and take more photographs and blog a lot more.

My battle with the language is well known, and I will continue with it. I don't know how long I will stay in Turkey but its important for me to be able to communicate.

My love for Turkish food grows every day, and I like to try new things. I would love to learn how to cook some of my favourite dishes, but until then I will enjoy eating them. Pass me the Baklava please.....

I hope 2015 brings you everything you wish for.
I relied on mime a lot of the time in Ankara, and it has failed me in Izmir, after trying to explain a few things to my landlady (Hornets, washing machine breakdown), so I'm now studying Turkish.

Unfortunately because of work commitments it's difficult for me to attend classes, so I am going down the self study route, with a couple of books, and post it notes stuck all around my flat, with new vocabulary.
I can remember vocabulary quite easily, but I'm having a big problem with grammar.

Last week I needed to pay an electric bill, but I wasn't sure where I could pay. I was due to pay my rent at the estate agents, so I took my bill along with me.

I was given the usual glass of tea on my arrival and I took my electric bill out, waved it at them, and said 'Electric, para, nerede?' 'Electric, money, where?' I sounded like a Turkish cave-woman, but they were so happy with my efforts. 'Excellent Turkish' they complimented me!

I don't worry about making mistakes and I am studying the grammar, but I am finally (very slowly) getting understood!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08874190377946087718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5745877263379793724.post-38751247557675543532014-12-13T12:22:00.000+02:002014-12-13T12:22:05.728+02:00Everybody needs good neighboursAfter moving into my apartment in Izmir, I have met a few of my neighbours. I live in a block of around 20 flats, and I'm situated right on the top floor, so I often pass my neighbour's doors and they are always willing to chat to the Yabanci (foreigner)!

The neighbours have been so welcoming even if I can't have a full conversation with them, and they often knock on the door with some food for me to try. This is often fruit, but also last month I also had a few offerings of Asure. Asure or Noah's Pudding is a dessert which is made of grains, fruits and nuts. It is claimed that when Noah's ark came to rest on Mount Ararat, Noah's family celebrated with a special dish. As they were running low on supplies they used what was remaining (grains, dried fruit etc) to make a dessert. This is now what is known as Asure and every family has a different recipe. Now it is made to celebrate the Ark's landing and shared with friends, family and neighbours. Even for someone with a sweet tooth, it's very sweet!!

Some Asure from one of my neighbours

I was stopped in the street near my flat recently, I think it was one of my many neighbours, keen to know if I was settling in. I assured her that I was and she went merrily on their way.

My next door neighbour often knocks on my door (or wall if I don't answer straight away). We have a short chat. Last time she brought me a plate of melon and invited me round to her home for coffee. When I'm a little bit more confident with my Turkish language skills I will go.

I have always found Turkish people to be very welcoming wherever I have visited, and I am so happy to be in my neighbourhood where they have welcomed me with open arms.

When I arrived I was staying in temporary accommodation while I looked for my own place. Finding a furnished flat is difficult in Izmir, they are in demand and the good ones are snapped up immediately. I scoured the internet for hours each day in the hope of being the first one to view a good place. I viewed a number of places, and none were suitable, or was I being too fussy?? I was getting disheartened when I saw a flat online, and there was a photo of the view, it was breath taking. I had to have a look at this place. I arranged a viewing for the next day (Saturday evening) and although it was on the top floor (70 stairs) I knew it was for me. I'm sure you will agree the view is stunning!

The flat is situated at the top of a hill, but is easily reached by Metro (Izmir's easy to follow underground railway, there is only one line!!). The area is vibrant and has a traditional feel to it. I haven't seen any other foreigners in this area as yet.

One of the first problems I had when I moved in was a large amount of hornets, or donkey bees as they are known as in Turkey. I tried to find out from my landlady if there was a nest in the roof, but everything got lost in translation, it started out as her thinking I couldn't open the balcony door, so I had a full demonstration. When I pointed to the roof, she thought I was trying to say that someone might try and get in through the roof, so I was taken to show how secure the building is! (I think I am now known as the crazy yabanci (foreigner)) So I have learnt to live with the 'Donkey Bees'. They have the balcony from 10-3, and I have it the rest of the time! I'm not sure where they come from but they only stick around for a few hours, so I live with it!

My washing machine broke, I was a little more successful in getting this across to the engineer. It was quickly fixed and all is well.

I have finally got internet. Again I was impressed with the efficiency, but this was shortlived. Stage one was supposed to take 7 working days, but this morning (on day 1 of the 7), the doorbell rang, I was faced with a red faced man who had just conquered the 70 stairs. 'Hello, little English, Internet.' Excellent, I let him in, he did his job, then he said 'I go now, I love you.' Umm OK, I can't imagine BT engineers declaring their love for their customers!! The modem was delivered a couple of days later, where the cheery engineer connected me, and said the internet signal would be with me that day. Unfortunately that's where the efficiency ended. It has taken a lot longer than the expected seven days, and each time I called them I was told 'There is a problem.' Obviously!!

I have now settled into life in Izmir, the pace is more relaxed than Ankara that's for sure!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08874190377946087718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5745877263379793724.post-44471731824168214832014-10-08T16:10:00.001+03:002014-10-08T16:10:46.734+03:00Landing in IzmirAfter spending a fantastic 2 month summer break in Wales with family and friends, it was soon time to start packing for my next adventure in Turkey and say goodbye to everyone. Packing was a challenge as I knew there were a lot of things I struggled to get in Turkey, or which were really expensive, so I packed my curry spices, coconut oil, stock cubes, supplements, wasabi peas and of course my beloved fruit pastilles. I went shopping for new shoes as its almost impossible to but shoes in Turkey for my huge (size 41 or 7 in UK) feet!!

Although I was sad to say goodbye to all my friends and family in Wales I was excited as I was moving to a different city and i had heard so many good things about Izmir. The big plus for me was that Izmir is located on the coast, and this is one of the big things I was missing in Ankara. Because of the location this would also mean milder winters, so no more -20 degrees Celsius for me again!! Izmir is the third biggest city in Turkey (after Istanbul and Ankara), with a population of approximately 3.5 million, so in comparison to North Wales it's huge, but it's smaller than Ankara.

I had never been to Izmir when I made the decision to accept a job there, but I had faith in my friends who were telling me so many positives about it.

I arrived at night and was taken straight to my hotel so I didn't get a chance to see the city until the following morning and I was impressed with what I saw. The city is quite clean, the air feels really clean, thanks to the proximity to the sea, there are palm trees everywhere and the and the city has a relaxed vibe about it. It feels a lot smaller than Ankara, and there is a lot less traffic (and a lot less beeping of the horn).

The city has a lot of tourists especially along the seafront when there is a cruise ship in the port.
Public transport is easy to use and efficient, and I especially like the frequent ferries to different parts of the city.

I'm really looking forward to exploring the city and seeing what the area has got to offer, and of course tasting the local cuisine. So far I have discovered the cig kofte is the best I have ever tasted!

I had already visited one lunchtime and had a ciger durum (liver wrap), which was amazing.

I had heard about the sampler afternoon that was now on offer at the restaurant. This is available for groups of 10 or more, and I joined a group on a Saturday afternoon during my holiday. The meal was a bargain at 30TL, and I made sure I only had a small breakfast that day as they are generous with their servings!

I arrived at 2 o'clock and met my fellow diners. I ordered my drink and then the food started to arrive! The sampler is a selection of food off the main menu, and as I usually stuck to the same options I was excited to try some different meals.

Mozaik Bahce specialises in food from the Hatay area which is in the South East of Turkey, and is known for its fantastic food. When I was in Ankara, all the students told me that I must try food from Hatay. Food from this area is spicy and full of flavour, so I knew I was in for a treat!

To start with we had a mixed meze plate and icli kofte (mincemeat in couscous) to share, with some of the restaurant's famous pepper bread.

After a short break the main meals were brought out - a mixed grill (sorry no photo), which had various meats, my favourite being the liver, which I never used to like at home, but this is so good, stuffed chicken (this is stuffed with cheese, pine and pistachio nuts) - this was very tasty, Ali Nazik - Minced meat and pine nuts served on a yoghurt base, again this was full of flavour, Arab Kebab - minced meat and vegetables, Tavuc Guvec - Chicken casserole served with cheese. All of the dishes were very tasty, but when I visited later in the week I selected the stuffed chicken from the menu as I had enjoyed it so much.
By this time I was feeling so full, but there were still the desserts to sample. I have never tried the desserts in Mozaik Bahce before as I never had any room for them, so I was determined to give them a try.

We had Sam Tatlisi - Semolina, Walnuts and Cinnamon, Cevizili Tas Kadayif - Pancakes stuffed with Walnuts and Cinnamon, Kunefe, Cevizli Havuc - Carrot Cake. I somehow managed to find room to give them all a try and I have to say the Cevizli Havuc (top of the plate slightly hidden by the ice cream) came out on top for me. It was delicious.
Calis Beach is where I first fell in love with Turkey, the friendly locals, the stunning sunset and the fantastic food. Unusually the weather wasn't great on this visit, with stormy weather, but I got to enjoy some sunshine, and of course ate some great food.

My favourite restaurant in Calis Beach has to be Aroma. Its a small restaurant in a perfect location on the seafront, where you can sit and listen to the waves, and of course watch the famous Calis sunset.

I was welcomed by Mustafa who is the perfect host, friendly, welcoming and willing to explain the menu and make recommendations if required. The restaurant serves Turkish and Greek food, and there's no rice, chips and salad combo here, which is a refreshing change as most of the other restaurants serve them, and I have to say it can get a little bit boring. No boring food in Aroma though!

I selected Papoutsakia to start, this is a greek dish, which is stuffed aubergine, with mincemeat and tomatoes. For my main meal, I chose something from the Turkish menu, which was chicken in a radish sauce.

First the garlic bread and dips came to the table, again something a little bit different for Calis Beach and they tasted very good.

My aubergine starter came out bubbling away, and was full of flavour.

Finally my main meal of the chicken and radish sauce was served, and it had so much flavour. The presentation was nice, and the side dishes of grilled vegetables (carrots and courgettes) and onion and orange were so tasty. Aroma serves different side dishes, so when I visited a second time I got something different, but it was equally as delicious.

After the meal I had a coffee and never felt rushed to leave. The service was friendly and efficient.

I would recommend Aroma to anyone in the Fethiye area who is looking for something a little bit different. I know I will be back again, and it will be at the top of my list for a visit!

I met some amazing people during my time there, students, colleagues and complete strangers. Turkish people are so welcoming and are willing to help you, whatever the problem. I had a few laughs with the problems with trying to learn the language, and unfortunately after my time there it didn't really improve as much as I had hoped, so during my time in the UK, I will study my Turkish language book ready for my return to Turkey in September.

I look back on my time here and I consider myself to be very lucky to be able to travel and meet so many wonderful people. I received such a welcome in Ankara, and made some good friends, who I am sure will remain friends for some time to come.

Something that struck me while I was in Ankara was how people stick together, and I saw evidence of that during some of the recent problems. One of my last classes I taught we talked about pride, and one of the students said 'I'm proud of my country, the people, the food and my football team.' I have to agree with the first three, but I'm not convinced by the fourth. Turkish people are very proud of their country and rightly so. Its a stunning country, and I am proud to have called it home for the last nine months. This isn't the end of my time here, as I plan to return to Turkey again in September, but I say goodbye to Ankara.

I will miss all my friends, thank you all for the welcome you gave me.
'Do you like Raki?'. My answer was always the same, 'No I don't like it.' The strong aniseed flavour is too much for me, and I remember the only time I drank it and I felt quite ill the morning after.

I was told by students I was drinking it all wrong, and I should drink it slowly (and don't drink any other alcohol with it) and its best with fish. I still wasn't convinced, so when I was asked to go for fish and Raki I was still a little unsure, but I was willing to give it a go and be proved wrong!

We went to a fantastic restaurant in the Tunali area of Ankara (http://www.marmarisbalikcisi.com/) and our Turkish friends ordered the food (and Raki).

We started off with some cheese, and the Raki was poured, it had to be mixed with just the right amount of water (and no ice), and you drink it slowly, with the food.

Unfortunately I forgot my camera, so have no photos of the Raki, but one of my friends took some photos of the meal.

The fish that had been ordered was Lagos (grouper), and was cooked in salt, it was brought to the table and set alight. Then the salt was chipped away before being served.

The fish tasted amazing and accompanied with salad and vegetables, it was a stunning meal, and yes I agree fish and Raki go well together.

We then had various fruit at the end of the meal which again was good with Raki, and then we finished the night with a Turkish coffee.

And the following morning?? I didn't feel like I had done previously when drinking Raki! I felt great!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08874190377946087718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5745877263379793724.post-28332385711030733872014-04-29T14:30:00.001+03:002014-04-29T14:30:22.982+03:00Delicious food in GoremeWhile we were in Cappadocia we visited the Old Cappadocia Restaurant in Goreme for an evening meal. We were tired after a long day and we came across the restaurant on the main street. The menu looked inviting.

I had heard about the wine from the Cappadocia region, so of course I had to give it a go, so I ordered a glass of white, and it was delicious, probably the best wine I have tasted during all of my visits to Turkey.

I ordered the Testi Kebab or Pottery Kebab, as this was a local dish I had seen and wanted to give it a try.

The waiter brought us some local 'flat' bread, and a small dish of oil and one of black pepper, and told us to dip the bread into the oil and then the pepper. It was really good.

Then the Testi Kebab arrived, it was served in a clay pot and arrived at the table on fire.

And if that wasn't dramatic enough the waiter brought a hammer, and broke open the pot. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of this as the fire, hammer and flying pottery was making me a little bit nervous, but once the top of the pot had been removed it revealed this:

Once the flames had died down, I was able to taste the meal, the taste lived up to the drama. It was a delicious casserole of chicken with vegetables in a tasty sauce, served with rice.

After another glass of wine we headed back to the hotel.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08874190377946087718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5745877263379793724.post-11405564250820908622014-04-17T21:18:00.000+03:002014-04-17T21:19:06.774+03:00At the MarketOne of the many great things about Turkey is the fresh fruit and vegetables, and its always an adventure to visit the local market every Friday for my supplies for the week, something I look forward to.

The stallholders are always welcoming, and try to teach me a little Turkish on each visit, and we always somehow manage to have a laugh and joke, usually because we can't understand each other!

The stalls always look colourful with all the different fruit and vegetables, sometimes when I don't know what something is they offer a piece for me to try, and see if I know what it is. Usually it doesn't help me much, but its always nice to try something new.
I was lucky enough to visit there last week and it truly is a stunning place. I was very surprised to hear from the guide that there are not many visitors there from the UK!

Cappadocia is about 4 hours away from Ankara on the bus, and we took the bus to the town of Goreme at 1.30 am, which meant we arrived at 5.30am in time for the sunrise. The area was busy even at that time of the morning, as there are many hot air balloon companies which take tourists to see sunrise. Unfortunately this was too expensive for us teachers, so we watched the balloons from a nearby vantage point.

It was a fantastic sight, and obviously big business for the companies in Cappadocia. The busy tourist season is April, May and September, October. The summer is too hot for tourists to explore the area. We then walked down to our hotel to see if we could check in, and we were in luck. We checked into our cave room at www.http://cappadociaufukpension.com/ which was clean and comfortable, and went in the search for some breakfast.

We were all starting to run out of steam, as we had travelled overnight straight after work, so a strong coffee was in order, along with menemen (scrambled eggs with tomato and green pepper). After breakfast we went on a search for a tour and found one that was leaving at 9.30am that was visiting Derinkuyu underground city (which is the deepest of the 36 underground cities in Cappadocia), Ihlara Valley and Selime Monastery, along with a couple of other photo opportunity stops. I am not a fan of tours, I prefer to find my own way around and go to places I want to go to, so I found the day very restrictive, but we met some interesting people and got to see some great places.
The evening was spent having a relaxing meal, and drink Cappadocia wine, which was probably the nicest wine I have found so far in Turkey, but the meal will be a separate blog!
After our night in the cave room, we had a typical Turkish breakfast in the hotel, and walked up to the Goreme Open Air Museum.
Soon after it was time to say goodbye to Cappadocia, and I hope to visit again. There is so much to see and do and two days are definitely not enough!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08874190377946087718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5745877263379793724.post-56585110555345814142014-03-05T11:34:00.001+02:002014-03-05T11:34:51.141+02:00Turkish Food - Cig KofteI was asked the other week by a student if I had tried cig kofte, and I said I hadn't. It was something she had told me that I must try when I first arrived in Turkey, so I think she was disappointed in me.

My lesson continued, and a little bit later there was a knock on the door, and it was a delivery of cig kofte from the takeaway a few doors away from the school. During their break the students had been and ordered some for me so I could finally try it.

Cig kofte is traditionally made from raw meat, but due to hygiene regulations the local takeaways are no longer allowed to use the raw meat and the cig kofte is now meatless unless you make it yourself at home. It is now made from Bulgar wheat, nuts and spices.

The students know I enjoy spicy food, and its a good job, because this was very spicy, and so much flavour. It is a popular street food and there are many places that you can get it. As a street food it is common to eat it wrapped in a durum wrap and it only costs a couple of lira. Another way to eat cig kofte is wrapped in a lettuce leaf.

I have tried both ways and I have to say I prefer it in a durum, with lettuce and pomegranate sauce, with some pickles on the side. I think I am hooked!
But I am a Welshy and today is St David's Day, so my thoughts go back to my homeland.

I am from North Wales, which is a beautiful part of the world. I often look through my photographs of the homeland, so I thought I would share some photographs of the place I call home.
It wasn't the first time I had visited as I went in October. The area is undergoing restoration at the moment, and in October it was difficult to see everything. This time was different. A lot of the work that was going on in October (all the areas for walking had been dug up) had been completed, and the sun was shining. There is still a lot of work going on in the area, but there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants in the area that have been completed.

Hamamonu is one of the oldest districts of Ankara, and is now almost completely pedestrianised, so it's a peaceful and tranquil area. It's a treat to sit outside one of the many cafes, restaurants and tea houses in the sunshine and watch the world go by. There are artist's studios in the square where they display their work.
I have always liked my coffee strong, but Turkish coffee is a little different, and has a thicker consistency.

When you order a Turkish coffee you are asked how you like it, this means how sweet do you want it? Sugar is added to the coffee when it is being brewed, rather than being added after. I always find that even if I ask for a little sugar, it is too sweet for me, so I always have it sade (no sugar), when I make it at home I will add one sugar cube for two cups and this is usually just right for me.

Turkish coffee is the way that the coffee is made, rather than the type of coffee bean. The coffee is ground very fine, finer than espresso, you put enough water for how many cups of coffee you want into the cezve (the special pot used for making the coffee, often made of copper), which is pictured below. You add the required amount of sugar, and then the coffee, but it is recommended not to stir at this point. It is heated slowly, in turkish homes the cooker has a small gas ring just the right size for the cezve. Traditionally though, the cezve is placed in a tray of sand which is placed above a heat source, this ensures that the coffee is heated slowly and evenly. On a recent trip to Hamamonu in Ankara, there were many cafes that prepared the coffee in this way.
The coffee is often served with Turkish Delight, a favourite of mine, and its sweetness compliments the bitterness of the coffee perfectly. You are always brought water with a Turkish coffee, to cleanse the palate.
The grains that are left in the coffee cup after the coffee has been drunk can be used for fortune telling. I'm generally not a believer in this and I'm sure everyone will see a different picture, but to me the grains in this cup resemble the Welsh Dragon....

The castle is in a very traditional area of the city, and on a clear day the views of the city are fantastic. Its quite a walk to the top, but its worth it.
